English Language International Exams
There are several English proficiency exams and assessments. International exams demonstrate student performance through four skills: comprehension, writing, grammar and speaking. International certification is a differential in the curriculum, in the job market, travel, and international studies.
I will present each of the exams, their different characteristics, and specifications.
:: TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) takes place all year round with dates established by registered assessment centers. It is required when entering universities and companies in the United States and Canada. It is valid for 2 years.
The first test was carried out in 1964, and approximately 20 million have already been carried out. Currently, the TOEFL IBT (Internet Based Test) is more widespread, although the Paper Based Test still applies.
:: TOEIC (Test of English in International Communication) takes place all year round with dates established by registered assessment centers. It proves the knowledge of the language in situations related to the corporate environment, being accepted by several multinational and international companies proving the ability to communicate in the business language. It is valid for 2 years.
It was developed by ETS, the largest private educational center in the world, also responsible for the TOEFL test in the 1970s. It is one of the most widely recognized business tests being done annually by more than 5 million people.
TOIEC certificates have different colors according to their score:
orange (10 to 215 points)
brown (220 to 465 points)
green (470 to 725 points)
blue (730 to 855 points)
yellow (860 to 990 points)
:: IELTS (International English Language Testing System) takes place at least twice a year with dates established by registered assessment centers. It is a test of English competence required as a prerequisite for entry to undergraduate and graduate courses at universities in Great Britain, Australia, Canada, and New Zealand. Mandatory for those who intend to emigrate. It is valid for 2 years.
It is divided into four sections and is answered in pencil. There are two versions: Academic and General Training. The first is aimed at those who intend to enter universities, undergraduate and graduate courses, and the second is used as a prerequisite for studies, internships, and jobs. In Brazil, it is possible to do it free of charge for students who intend to enroll in the Science without Borders program.
